Jane es autora de 47 novelas, casi todas ellas superventas. Ha vendido más de 12 millones de libros. El libro que acaba de ser traducido en español, 'Ligando a los cuarenta' ('Flirting with forty') se publicó en 2006 y es en gran medida autobiográfico. Se agotaron 6 ediciones en pocas semanas y en 2008 se rodó una película para la televisión protagonizada por Heather Locklear.
Ha sido finalista de los premios RITA en numerosas ocasiones, la última de los cuales precisamente la de este año, con su último libro, 'Take me, Cowboy'. "¿Cuándo decidió escribir su primera novela y qué le hizo decantarse por el romance?1. When did you decide to write your first novel? And what made you write romance?
"He estado escribiendo desde la infancia. Recuerdo haber deseado hacerlo desde que tengo memoria. Me encantaba soñar y crear historias con un final feliz. Era importante para mí que la princesa que se hallaba encerrada en el torreón encontrara la forma de escapar para encontrar a su príncipe. No era necesario que él tuviera que ir en su busca y salvarla sino que ella encontrara la forma de encontrar su felicidad. Siempre parecía natural que se escribiera romances para crear un final feliz para siempre."
I’ve been writing since I was in kindergarten! I remember wanting to write from as far back as I can recall in my childhood. I used to love daydreaming and spinning stories with a happy ending. It was essential to me that the princess locked away in her tower did find a way to get out to find her prince. Not necessarily that he had to come save her but that she did find a way to get her happy ending. It seemed only natural to want to write romances to create more happily ever afters!

2. Can you tell us about the process you had to follow in order to publish your first novel?
"Aunque he publicado poesía y relatos de no ficción en revistas nacionales, me llevó cerca de 15 años de duro trabajo y 13 manuscritos rechazados antes de que finalmente publicara con Harlequin Mill & Boon en Londres en el 2000. Desde entonces he escrito 47 libros (ninguno de los rechazados ha visto aún la luz) y estoy a punto de comenzar con otro.
Although I’ve had poetry and non-fiction pieces published in national magazines, it took me nearly 15 years of incredibly hard work, and 13 rejected manuscripts, before I finally sold to Harlequin Mill& Boon in London in 2000. Since then I’ve written 47 books (none of the rejects have ever seen the light of day ) and am about to start another.
Did my Masters in Writing help me sell? Mmmm, no. Did it teach me about the craft of writing? Yes. The bottom line is that I am a commercial fiction writer and I had to learn not just how to write a beautiful passage or honest emotion, but I had to figure out how the market, the genres, the industry pet peeves as well as how to write page turners. The secret to selling is writing really compelling stories. Books that keep a reader up late at night. And I don’t think that kind of thing can be taught in a classroom but rather a writer develops his or her writing chops through lots and lots of practice.

En el fondo yo soy una escritora de ficción comercial y no solo tengo que aprender a escribir pasajes hermosos o emociones honestas, sino que también tenía que averiguar sobre el mercado, los géneros, y los palos que da la industria al igual que saber escribir libros apasionantes. El secreto para vender es escribir historias absorbentes. Libros que mantengan al lector despierto hasta tarde en la noche. Y no penséis que ese tipo de cosas se enseñan en una clase, sino que un escritor desarrolla su escritura tras mucha práctica."
"¿Quienes son sus autores favoritos y qué libro ha significado más para usted?"
3. Who are your favourite authors? and which book has meant the most for you?
"Adoro la romántica, ficción histórica, romance paranormal, y algunas ficciones literarias... pero my autor favorito es sin duda Georgette Heyer. Murió en los 70 pero he leído todos los libros que ha escrito y es mi máxima lectura de confort."
I love romances, historical fiction, paranormal romance, and some literary fiction… but my absolute favorite author has to be Georgette Heyer. She died in the ‘70’s but I have every book she’s written and she’s my ultimate comfort read.
"¿Encuentras inspiración en la música, y si es así qué tipo de música?"
4. Do you find inspiration in music? If so, what type of music.
"Encuentro inspiración en la música y tengo una lista personal para cada libro, pero mi gusto es muy eléctrico. Me encantan las canciones de emociones fuertes por lo que las banda sonoras son increíblemente inspiradoras de emociones y ayuda a extraer la creatividad durante un largo día de escritura. Cuando escribo romántica del oeste, me gusta escuchar música country, mis favoritas son Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Jake Owens, Jennifer Nettles (y por supuesto Sugarland!) También cuento con una lista de U2, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Cold Play, y Adele. Suelo variar, dependiendo de mi estado de ánimo."
I do find inspiration in music and have a personal playlist for most books I write but my taste is very eclectic. I love songs with strong emotion so musical soundtracks are incredible for inspiring emotion and helping sustain creativity during a long writing day. When I write cowboy romance, I like to listen to Country music though, with my favorites being Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Jake Owens, Jennifer Nettles (and of course Sugarland!). You’ll also find U2, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Cold Play, and Adele on my music list. It just varies, depending on my mood.

5. We would like to know more about your literary projects in the future, will you keep writing romance or is there any other genre you would like to cover?
I'm drawn to writing romance novels because they are relationship stories...love stories...which requires characters to grow and change. I don’t think there is a genre I prefer, but a theme—love. Love ties us, binds us, hurts us, heals us. Love is complex and both steadfast and changing. It can dazzle us and mystify us. Comfort us and then break us. There are times we need it, crave it, and there are other times we push it away, and choose to go without. I don’t think I will ever get tired of writing about people and what we want and need, which is almost always acceptance, validation, hope, and love. Love is the focal point of every story I write.
"Me atrae escribir novelas románticas porque están llenas de relaciones amorosas... historias de amor... que requieren que los personajes evolucionen y crezcan. No creo que haya otro género que me interese más, solo un tema - el amor. El amor nos une, nos encadena, nos duele, nos cura. El amor es complejo y puede ser inalterable o cambiar. Puede cegarnos y confundirnos. Hacernos sentir cómodos y después rompernos. Hay veces que lo necesitamos, que lo ansiamos, y otras lo empujamos lejos y elegimos marcharnos sin él. No creo que me canse nunca de escribir sobre las personas y lo que queremos y necesitamos, que suele ser aceptación, validez, esperanza y amor. El amor es el punto central de cada historia que escribo.
My upcoming projects include another book in my Copelands series from Harlequin Presents, the third book in my Sheenans series from Tule Publishing and in this book, I’ll be sharing Cormac Sheena’s story which I’m just finishing up now. Then I’ve got a single title book due at Berkley early September, and a couple more stories to write for Tule again. It’s going to be a summer packed with a lot of writing but I’m really looking forward to it!

6. What is your opinion about self publishing?
I think Self-Publshing is growing in leaps and bounds and it’s the next step for most authors who want more direct control over their careers. It’s an untapped market that can yield fabulous results if you can learn enough about the business and use it to your advantage. An increasing number of authors are realizing that there are great advantages to going 'indie' if you have the time and resources to put into it. But it’s a LOT of hard work. It requires a lot of dedication, an immense amount of time, a willingness to constantly learn and stay on top of industry change, and then, tons of promotion. For anyone who ventures into self-publishing, the story doesn’t end at just writing a book and making it available for sale on major retail sites. That’s just the first little step. Once you finish the story, then it's time to figure out how to get readers to buy it.
"Creo que está creciendo a grandes saltos y es el próximo paso para escritores que quieren un control más directo de su carrera. Es un mercado sin explotar que puede sembrar resultados fabulosos si aprendes lo suficiente sobre el negocio y lo usas para tu beneficio. Un gran número de autores se están dando cuenta de que hay una gran ventaja en ser "Indie" si tienes el tiempo y los recursos para hacerlo. Pero es MUCHO trabajo. Requiere mucha dedicación, un inmenso montón de tiempo, una voluntad constante de aprender y estar en lo alto de la industria y además, toneladas de promoción. Para alguien que se aventura a la autopublicación, la historia no termina con solo escribir un libro y llevarlo a la venta en grande plataformas. Eso es solo el primer paso. Una vez que acabas la historia, tienes que arreglartelas para conseguir lectores que la lean."

7. Any advice to new authors?
"Publicar es un negocio complicado y la perseverancia es la llave. Tener opiniones de otros es una buena forma de mejorar en tu escritura. Continúa aprendiendo las técnicas. Solo porque te hayan abierto las puertas no significa que el trabajo duro y el aprendizaje se ha acabado. Solo es el principio y debes seguir puliendo tu técnica. Leer libros de técnicas, asistir a los talleres, interaccionar con otros escritores."
Publishing is a hard business and perseverance is key. Getting feedback is a great way to make your writing better and stronger. Keep learning the craft. Just because you got your foot in the door doesn’t mean the hard work and the learning is over. It’s only just started and you have to keep honing your craft. Read craft books, attend workshops, interact with other writers.
